If you are comparing HMOs, you probably want a straight answer: what does Reliance HMO actually offer, and is it right for you? We’re Reliance HMO, so we’re not neutral, but this page sets out the facts plainly, including where our plans may not suit you, so you can decide with your eyes open.
Reliance HMO at a glance
- Who we are: a health maintenance organisation that is part of Reliance Health, a health technology company with roots in Lagos and more than a decade of experience
- Members: over 251,000 plan members and more than 1,600 businesses
- Network: over 2,700 hospitals, clinics and other providers in every state in Nigeria
- Investors: backed by General Atlantic, Partech and others, including a $40 million funding round in 2022
- Support: 24/7 through the Reliance Care app, phone (0700-RELIANCE) and email. Download it for iPhone or Android.
Plans we offer
For businesses: company health plans for larger organisations, and small business plans for teams of 3 to 19 staff. Small business plans run from Red Beryl, from ₦68,400 per person per year, to Red Diamond, from ₦268,850, with family cover available.
For individuals and families: plans sold through Alafia by Reliance Health, including Serenity plans for older parents and the Tranquility pay-as-you-go plan.
What stands out
- Technology: the Reliance Care app lets members find hospitals, see their benefits, chat with a doctor at any time and order prescriptions.
- Telemedicine and drug delivery: many consultations can happen by app, and prescriptions can be delivered.
- Roaming: members can use network hospitals in other states, which matters if you travel for work.
- Wellness benefits: depending on the plan, these include gym access, spa visits, annual health checks and cancer screening.
- Chronic conditions: company plans and Serenity plans cover pre-existing conditions such as diabetes and hypertension.
- Emergencies: members can go to the nearest network hospital without pre-approval for the first 24 hours.
- Reimbursement: when members pay for covered care themselves, eligible claims are reimbursed within five working days on Alafia plans.
Where we may not suit you
- Maternity on individual cover: our personal plans exclude obstetric care. If you are planning a pregnancy, a company plan that includes maternity is usually the better route. See does HMO cover pregnancy?
- Waiting periods: like most HMOs, some benefits, such as surgery and cancer care, only start after a waiting period.
- Hospital tiers: lower-priced plans give access to fewer hospitals. Check that your preferred hospital is on your plan before you buy.
- Price: we are not the cheapest HMO in Nigeria. Our plans are built around wider networks, app-based care and wellness extras, which won’t matter to everyone.
Is Reliance HMO accredited?
