Some people say our skin is part of our pride. But I know for sure that in some way everyone is concerned about their skin, how they look and what makes them glow.  You may think you have a dry, oily, or sensitive skin but do you really know your skin type. Also, do you know how to care for your skin? Did you know that using the wrong skincare products can affect your skin and can cause skin problems?

Getting clear skin is everyone’s dream but sometimes it takes you being deliberate to achieve this. Regardless of your skin type here are some tips for having clear skin for all skin types

How do you achieve this skincare?

These few tips to help you take care of your skincare. It can be done with any skin type

Stay hydrated

If your skin is not getting a sufficient amount of water, your skin would start getting dry, tight, and flaky. Drink at least 8 glasses of water each day to flush away toxins from the body. When your skin is clear you definitely now you have been taking water adequately.

Change pillowcases at least once a week

It’s healthy to keep your sleeping area fresh clean and free from bacteria. Make sure you change your pillowcase at least once a week to avoid pimples and allergies

Wash or wrap up hair before bed

You don’t want your hair falling all over your face. Your face doesn’t need any harsh surface that can transfer germs. Wrap your high tightly before you go to bed, you can wear a hair bonnet or net or use a scarf

After practicing this proper hygiene if you feel you need to go further by using cleansers and serum. You must first test it and know how your skin reacts. Once you’re comfortable, you can then add extra products such as exfoliants, masks, and spot treatments to boost your skin’s health.

If you have sensitive skin, you should patch test new products, just using any product may cause your reactions you did not bargain for. This would help you know any form of allergic reactions.

To patch test a new product:

  1. Apply a small amount of product on your skin in a discreet area, such as the inside of your wrist or your inner arm.
  2. Wait 48 hours to see if there’s a reaction.
  3. Check the area at 96 hours after the application to see if you have a delayed reaction.

To know if you have an allergic reaction, it would appear in the form of irritation, redness, small bumps, or itchiness. If you notice these symptoms, wash the area you tested with water and a gentle cleanser. You can get another product that suits your skin type and stop using the one that causes your reaction.

Skincare Hacks To Avoid

A lot of people talk about how some natural products like lemon juice and toothpaste help solve their skin problems like pimples, dark spots. Little do they know that is more harmful in the long run to their skin than protecting it.

  1. Lemon juice: It can dry and irritate your because it is but it’s far too acidic and can cause dark spots to appear after you go under the sun.
  2. Baking soda: At a pH level of 8, baking soda will stress your skin, significantly decrease your skin’s water content, and cause dry skin.
  3. Garlic: When in the raw form, garlic can cause skin allergies, eczema, skin inflammation, and watery blisters.
  4. Toothpaste: It can cause pimples to dry out, as it contains alcohol, baking soda, hydrogen peroxide, and essential oils, but it will also irritate and damage your skin
  5. Sugar: As an exfoliant, sugar is too harsh for the skin on your face. The rough nature of sugar makes it far too harsh for facial skin.  This can create small tears in the skin and lead to damage.
  6. Vitamin E: Application of vitamin E can irritate your skin and is not proven to improve scar appearance.

Some of these ingredients may be all-natural and cost-effective, but they are not meant for your skin. You may not notice the side effects immediately but they are causing long term damage to your skin. It’s best you use skincare products that are made for your skin. Always talk to your doctor or dermatologist before trying skincare routines on your skin.

Thank you Ify for your response. God bless you too.

Dr. Kemi says:

Thank you for this question Oluwatofunmi, I would write an article on this. But for now, I will advise that you exercise, use waist trainers or try tying a wrapper on around your belly button every now and then. Also, try to drink more of hot fluid, and reduce cold drinks.

Dr. Kemi says:

Yes, it can, this is because it is harsh on the skin especially when you go under the sun immediately.

Dr. Kemi says:

Tumeric is good for the skin, you can keep using that. But you should stop using sugar because of the longterm effect. You can get a good moisturizer to keep your skin properly hydrated e.g. Cetaphil. You can also get good face wipes to clean your face whenever it’s oily, this helps to mattify the face.

Dr. Kemi says:

For oily skin, you should get a good moisturizer. I would recommend Cetaphil. You can also get good face wipes to clean your face whenever it’s oily, this helps to mattify the face.
