A family plan usually covers a principal member (the person who buys the plan or is employed), their spouse and a set number of children. Each person gets the same benefits and hospital list. Most HMOs price family plans as one bundle or per person, and many limit the number of children who can be added.

Reliance HMO’s small business plans, for businesses with 3 to 19 staff, offer family cover. Paying yearly, family cover starts from ₦232,000 per person per year on Red Beryl, ₦380,000 on Alexandrite and ₦648,500 on Diamond. See the small business benefits for the full list.
1. Your employer’s plan. If your company offers health insurance, ask HR whether your spouse and children can be added. Group plans spread risk across many people, so they usually give more cover for less money than a private family plan. Reliance HMO’s company health plans can include maternity care, immunisation and neonatal intensive care.
2. A small business plan. If you run a business with at least five staff, a small business plan can cover you, your team and your families.
3. A private plan. If neither option is available, compare individual plans for each family member, and check carefully what they exclude, especially pregnancy and pre-existing conditions.
4. Separate cover for older parents. Most family plans don’t cover parents. Plans built for older adults, such as Alafia’s Serenity plans, cover conditions such as diabetes and hypertension.
Can I add my children to my HMO plan?
On most employer and family plans, yes. Ask your HMO or HR team how many children can be added and whether there is an extra cost.
Does a family HMO plan cover pregnancy?
Some do. Company plans often include maternity care, while many individual plans exclude it. Always check before you buy.
Can I add my parents to my family plan?
Usually not. Parents normally need their own plan. See health insurance for parents in Nigeria.
Is it cheaper to buy a family plan through my employer?
Usually, yes. Group plans spread the cost across many members.
