While we’re all stuck at home during this lockdown situation, you should engage yourselves with movies and shows that take your minds off the global pandemic for a moment. I have made a list of 6 movies and shows that you should watch during this period.
If you haven’t watched Money Heist yet, what have you been doing with your life? (OK, perhaps you’re trying to get used to this lockdown) Money Heist is a Spanish show, currently on its fourth season, focused on a thrilling heist: a group of eight robbers is recruited by the mysterious “Professor” to carry out a massive heist. No personal information is given out to each other or anyone else, no personal attachments are allowed, and no violence during the heist. Of course, it wouldn’t be a drama if those rules didn’t get broken. Even the Professor wasn’t left out, forming a bond with the police negotiator as the heist slowly begins to go sideways. You have to watch this show. It will have you at the edge of your seat, waiting to see what’s going to happen next.
It’s a Turkish movie that was released in 2019. It tells the story of the relationship between a young girl called Ova and her dad Memo, who has a cognitive disorder. They lived together until Memo was accused of killing a high-ranking military official’s daughter. Memo ends up in prison because of a crime he did not commit. This makes Ova sad and she struggles to prove his innocence. She enlists the help of her great grandmother and school teachers to find the witness Memo claimed he saw when the high-ranking military official’s daughter suffered an accident and died.
Meanwhile, in prison, Memo’s life becomes miserable when the prisoners turn against him, he’s found guilty of murder and is sentenced to death by hanging. The concluding part of the movie was a bit confusing, you may want to pay extra attention to it so you don’t miss the twist. This movie got a lot of people in their feelings, most people cried even. It is a really emotional movie.
This thriller series is all about a bookstore manager, Joe Goldberg, as he obsessively pursues love. The show starts with him obsessing over a graduate-school student he just met, Guinevere Beck when she comes to the bookstore to do what people do at bookstores- buy books. His obsession continues and gets deeper as he begins to see her regularly. Unlike other love stories, things get really dangerous as Joe begins to reveal his dark, violent side. Murder and other mysteries begin to surface.
This show is going to have you watching your back in paranoia, because your own Joe may be lurking somewhere in the shadows.
Fun fact: The series is based on a book written by Caroline Kepnes, it was published in 2015.
Spenser – an ex-cop known for making trouble rather than solving it – just got out of prison and is leaving Boston for good. But first, he gets involved in helping his old boxing coach and mentor, Henry. When two of Spenser’s former colleagues turn up murdered, he is initially suspected of the crime, being an ex-convict but is later released because he had an alibi. He went on to recruit his roommate, Hawk, and his foul-mouthed ex-girlfriend, Cissy, to help him investigate and bring the culprits to justice. This is an action-comedy movie about dirty cops, murders, solving mysteries and unraveling shady deals. It is a fun movie to watch.
Funny how at the start of the movie, the relationship is already over. This movie tells the story of a couple (Charlie and Nicole). They realize that they are incompatible and the futures they want are completely different. This leads to them separating and getting a divorce. They are trying to get through the separation without involving lawyers.
In the midst of all these, they have a son which they both love dearly. Nicole (the wife) wants to move to Los Angeles where she has a new job while Charlie wants to remain in New York. This leads to a series of disagreements. They finally decide to involve their lawyers and this is the straw that broke the camel’s back. The movie showed the reality of divorce and how it affects what’s left of the relationship after separation. It was a good one, you should check it out!
Another Spanish show on my list. Las Encinas is the most exclusive school in the country- where the Elite sends their children to study. Three transfer students have just been admitted on scholarship after an earthquake destroyed their school. There is a gap between the elite and the average kids in school. Constant clashes between those who have everything and those who have nothing to lose. The difference in society and class creates a perfect storm that ends in a murder. Who committed the crime?
Love, high school drama, lifestyle, suspense, murder, this show has it all. No wonder the whole world is talking about this show and it ranks highly on Netflix. It seems Spanish shows tick all the boxes.
Spoiler Alert: Some of my faves from Money Heist are also in this show.
